The Lünersee
most beautiful place in Austria
Lake Lünersee at the foot of the Schesaplana is considered the "turquoise jewel of the Rätikon". It is one of the most beautiful Alpine lakes and, at 1,970 metres, the highest reservoir in Europe. Once one of the largest mountain lakes in the Eastern Alps, the capacity of the Lünersee was increased by a dam in 1959. The lake is located at the end of the Brandner Valley and belongs to the municipality of Vandans in the Montafon. From time immemorial, the land of the Alps around the lake has been used by farmers from the Montafon. This is because the paths from Brandnertal were too steep and rocky for cattle drives. Even today, the path to the lake bears the name "Böser Tritt". In any case, the ascent by cable car is more pleasant. Take a leisurely stroll along the lakeshore or use the Lünersee as a starting point for numerous hiking routes. For a break in between, the Douglass Hut offers cool drinks and Vorarlberg specialities as well as a playground to linger in.
