The Bregenz Festival is a series of superlatives that began life in 1946 with the first “play on the lake“. In the first few years, the Bregenz Festival offered above all operettas.
The Bregenz lake-stage was opened in 1949 and made possible the use of the most modern stage machinery and special effects. The opening of the new Bregenz Festival House took place in 1980.
In the 70's, Bregenz changed from operetta to opera: “The Flying Dutchman“ (1973), “Carmen“ (1974) and “Turandot“ (1979). Famous productions from the 80's are: “Les Contes d´Hoffmann “(1987), “The Magic Flute “(1985), “Carmen “(1991). Due to these performances, the Bregenz Festival secured a place in the internationally famous summer festivals.
The largest lake-stage, the most interesting directors, unique opera productions and for over 50 years one of the greatest orchestras: the Vienna Symphoniker. It attracts an international public, many come because of the productions on the lake-stage, others because of the many rare highly regarded opera pieces and the symphony concerts.
To be seen in 2006 on the lake: Giuseppe Verdi‘s famous opera “THE TROUBADOUR“
